Ryzenberg On: Midwinter Maxi Skirts

Don’t be sad we have a few weeks of winter left — just make the most of it. If you are tired of wearing pants, leggings and jeans, (repeat, wash, dry clean, repeat) lower your seams and go for maxi skirts.

These ultra long fun pieces not only elongate your gams, they are also a great transitional piece you can wear in spring and summer. Wear now with boots and a hat, and later with sandals or wedges. Jazz it up with some bold baubles to give it more of a bohemian feel.

A perfect cure to the winter blues and a sure bet to make you stand from the pack.

Ryzenberg On: SAG Awards Stunners

The Screen Actors Guild Awards is always a fun show to watch. Celebs are usually a little more relaxed, as they are judged by their own peers, but fortunately when it comes to style they all wore their Sunday best. ‘Modern Family,’ ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and ‘The Help’ were all crowned big winners, and many of its stars wowed on the red carpet.

The carpet was filled with color, jewels, risks and old Hollywood glam. Although some opted for a classic feel, I must say I was impressed by the array of gowns on display and the stars truly strutted their stuff.

Here are a few of the looks that caught my attention.

Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen — She truly masters the red carpet look. In this case, she opted for a black gown that was risky and playful, yet she pulled it off. The detail on the bodice was incredible and her Tiffany and Co. jewels were exquisite.

Zoe Saldaña in Givenchy Haute Couture — Whoever dressed Ms. Saldaña needs to win an award! This dress debuted on the Paris runway nearly four days ago and already made its way onto A-list stardom. This is a daring, fashion forward look that may start some sartorial debates, but its details are divine and it works very well with Zoe’s skin tone.

Julie Bowen in Temperley — The color of this dress and the shoulder details are incredible, but its back was the piece the resistance, as it was completely open. The ‘Modern Family’ star always kills it on the carpet. I also love her hair pulled back on a pony tail.

Emily Blunt in Oscar de la Renta — As soon as she stepped on the carpet, the Twitterverse lit up. Everyone commented on how amazing this bright green dress with a thigh-high split was. It was indeed flawless and it worked so well with her hair pulled back and minimal jewels. John Krasinski is one lucky guy.

Tilda Swinton in Lanvin — This trendsetting star, known for pushing the boundaries when it comes to red carpets, went the classic route in this Lanvin number.

Natalie Portman in Gianbasttista Valli — After winning a Golden Globe, a SAG award and the coveted Oscar last year, the new mom was back in the spotlight, but this time as a presenter. The petit star chose a monochromatic look and kept the accessories to a minimum. Her figure looks fantastic after giving birth to baby Aleph less than a year ago.

Viola Davis in Marchesa — Viola was indeed the belle of the ball tonight. Not only she nabbed the Best Actress award, but the cast of ‘The Help’ also won for Best Ensemble. Her marchesa gown made quite a statement with its rose gold floral embroidery bodice that showed her fit physique. The look was complete with stunning earrings and bangles accompanied with smoky eyes and a sexy ‘do.

Rose Byrne in Elie Saab — The ‘Bridesmaids’ star took a serious gamble by wearing a sequined jumpsuit with a plunging neckline. It works well with her bob and I love the 1970s vibe it brings. Although not mainstream and few people can pull it off, Rose absolutely rocked it and I applaud her for this choice!

Michelle Williams in Valentino — This is Hollywood glamour at its finest. Michelle is known for her impeccable sense of style and this number is certainly no exception. The winning touch? She went sans baubles, making her pixie cut and neckline the main focus.

The Art of Fashion by Alexa Varis

Alexa Varis started doing fashion illlustrations in 1991 when she was 8 years old and haven’t really put her pencil down since. Hailing from southwest Colorado, she arrived in San Francisco in 2004 to work in the music industry - which has changed exponentially since then. When that fizzled, she started taking fashion design classes and now consider herself a fledgling fashion designer, semi-pro fashion illustrator and n00b fashion blogger! She’s excited to join SFFAMA as an online art contributor by illustrating her little heart out, cooking up some rad clothing designs and producing fashion, art and music events around town.

Ryzenberg On: Marni for H&M Preview

Spoiler Alert: Spasiva Vogue Russia for this wonderful Marni for H&M preview. Shot by Robert Wyatt, the magazine spread features a bevy of looks that are incredible. I personally love the orange top with the hot pink shorts and the polka dots have my name written all over it.

I am sure more pictures will soon begin to surface, but so far I like what I am seeing. The collection doesn’t hit U.S. stores until March 8, and I am sure the buzz around it will start to grow. I am definitely going to hit the stores to check out all of the goodies, and of course, I am banking of walking out with some of the coveteables that will be available.

#FASHIONTECHSF @FIDMSF 01.19.2012

by: Lexie Tiongson

A couple of aspiring fashion goers gathered on Thursday, January 19th at FIDM for FASHION+TECHSF’s Workshop: Applying Mobile Tech Strategies to Your Fashion Business. Speakers included Karen Song of Stylematic and Yuan Zhang of ShopNear.me.

Owners of fashion businesses learned how the marketing aspect of fashion industry is what’s most important.

Stylematic introduced their mobile app as a tool that focuses on personalization for shoppers. It is the “Pandora” for personal style. Stylmatic understands your preferences for what you like and what you want to buy. All of you have to do is complete a style profile.

ShopNear.me also announced their mobile app as a tool for shopper to discover what stores are near and what you can buy from a lot of San Francisco boutiques. It showcases what they carry, what style they have and what designers they have. The app also gives shoppers a discount.

A discussion came to follow about how owners of fashion businesses can adopt and implement mobile technology into their business. Discovery becomes the absolute key for mobile app boutiques. Learning about something new excites customers and wants them to involve themselves in the retail store or fashion business.

As technology gets utilized in many businesses throughout the US, mobile technology becomes just as important. Fashion businesses can take advantage of this way to market their brand. Mobile apps are a way for their clients to benefit from potential discounts and discovery of fashion boutiques and retail stores.

In conclusion, applying mobile tech strategies to your fashion business would be a great thing to consider as an addition to marketing and introducing your brand.

FIDM and SFFAMA sponsored the workshop. PR and Marketing done by Owen Geronimo. Hostess: Marcelina M. Burch. Moderator: Nick Frost.

Kate Moss For Mango

Mango Fashion presented Kate Moss as the new face of the Mango Fashion Spring/Summer 2012 campaign.

In an exclusive interview Kate Moss talk about the great time she has had being part of Mango Fashion and working with Terry Richardson “I’m really excited to be working with Mango for S/S 2012, we had a great time shooting the campaign, the team are so easy to work with and shooting with Terry is always fun.”
MANGO Fashion has also produced a new TV commercial featuring Kate Moss, called Spy Game. Shot under the direction of Terry Richardson in London, the film will be launched in early March in approximately forty countries, including France, Germany, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

MANGO fashion has a reputation for featuring models and actresses of international stature and Kate Moss is the perfect choice to take over from Isabeli Fontana who was the face of the A/W 2011 collection. In the past MANGO has also worked with Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Milla Jovovich, Lizzy Jagger, Karolina Kurkova, Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, Inés Sastre, Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington and Diane Kruger.

The new season MANGO Fashion trends include graphic contrasts between clean and unstructured lines. As a variation to the cleanliness of lines, the collection has a clear 60’s influence, particularly in the dresses. Lightweight, pleated and gathered fabrics offer movement and present a fresh, flirty and feminine touch. MANGO is also introducing a more casual line, bringing together ethnic elements and blending them with sportswear details to give a very simple, strong urban look. Tie-dye, abstract prints and patchwork in indigo and yellow tones with unwashed effects reinforce the casual appeal.

MANGO Fashion opened its first store in Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia in 1984 and now has over 2,400 stores in 107 countries. Its concept is based on a quality fashion product combined with the latest fashion trends at an affordable price. The brand image is reinforced by its stores, which benefit from a dynamic image in accordance with the personality of its customers, and represent the calling card for the brand. The new Kate Moss campaign was photographed by Terry Richardson, styled by Géraldine Saglio, Make Up by Charlotte Tilbury and Hair Stylist Odile Gilbert

This year’s “PRÊT-À-PORTER SF” 2011, with mass market in mind, was an amalgamation of global fashion, technology and sophistication.   Designers hailed from Ireland, The Middle East, South Africa, Thailand, China, Russia and the United States, which was a genuine representation of today’s global fashion.  Sustainable fashion and technology were also an apparent theme, with Carol Wang’s presentation of bamboo fabrics, Sonas Denim’s literal take on recycling of denims and the stylish integration of advanced materials and design with personal media technology by Alphyn IndustriesAnya TatarenkoKajan Padraig  and LHC Couture with WorkPlayDate and Sasha Maksutenko jewelries, brought clean sophistication to the runway with beautifully fitted and elegant women’s ready to wear. Frankees Samad debuted her design with her personal modernizations of the Islamic dress.

SFFAMA’s founder, Owen Geronimo, feels that San Francisco is now ready for a worldwide audience. “PRÊT-À-PORTER SF” 2011 is one of the many successful fashion events along, with Project San FranciscoThe Beauty ExpoFashion FeudFashion Mash-Up Workshops and San Francisco Fashion Week ™,  that SFFAMA has brought to fruition, which are all labors of love with strong community support.  One of SFFAMA’s main goals is to establish San Francisco as a global fashion destination and as a catalyst of fashion and technology convergence.  SFFAMA strongly believes in social good “to utilize fashion-to apply-to make impact” in our ongoing philanthropic efforts and mentorship program with our ‘Fashion4Good’ project.

Ryzenberg On: Tickle a Fashionista’s Fancy

After extensive blog research from the Ryzenberg On investigative unit, (OK, me) there are many things that stylish gals covet that go beyond clothes, shoes and baubles. But let me make something clear, we can never have enough of the aforementioned items.

However, since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, sometimes it’s the little things that make us smile and anything pretty will always wow us. We love good fresh smells, (perfumes, candles and flowers) anything sumptuous (warning: this one might follow a ‘do I look fat or have I gained weight’ ponder) and soft (puppies and kittens, please apply.)

So if you are looking to impress your girl of BFF, here are a few ideas that might make you one lucky dog, not just on Feb. 14 for year-round bliss. Oh yeah, and leave the lingerie for us to get, but if you really want a preview, make a date so that way Victoria doesn’t hold any secrets.

#FASHIONTECHSF 01.19.12 Recap (Part 1)

[ THANK YOU to KAREN SONG and the Stylematic Team, Yuan Zhang of ShopNear.me, NICK FROST of Angel Hack and FIDMSF. Photos By: SHAUN TIANGSING ]

FASHION+TECHSF (formerly FashionMashup) is the longest running monthly workshop and event series in the San Francisco Bay Area focused synergistically on building, promoting and educating the vibrant community of fashion and technology entrepreneurs, designers, developers, bloggers, business professionals, students, investors and numerous enthusiastic companies, schools, groups and individuals who share our vision of a world-class fashion and technology industry that is innovative, disruptive and uniquely San Francisco.

Our mission is to create educational, social and business opportunities for the fashion and technology industries. In the past two years, FASHION+TECHSF has become the leading network for all things fashion and technology in the SF Bay Area.

SHAUN TIANGSING is a very disciplined up-and-coming photographer that works with SFFAMA at many events like San Francisco Fashion Week. He was nominated for Best Photographer at San Francisco Fashion Awards 2011. His work has been published in SF Chronicles’s Style section. A self-proclaimed introvert with a bad memory, Shaun uses photography as a tool to document or remember things. His poignant relationship with the camera makes him an outstanding photographer with the appreciation of the craft as an art form.
