SF Design Week 2012: New Gen Runway | Highlights

[ Photos by Jennymay Villarete ]

ROGUE began a men’s collection of updated classic outerwear with downtown influences. Built around the lifestyle of New York based designer Jimmy Reilly, the casual masculine leather and cloth outerwear collection rapidly gained prominence in top retail stores across North America. For more than a decade Rogue’s distinct identity, fit and market leadership inspired its designer to further develop the vision. In the Autumn of 2009, the scope of that vision was realized in the expansion of the brand as a contemporary men’s lifestyle collection. New categories include washed and wired woven shirts, soft comfy knits and tees, chunky sweaters, warm vests and creased slim pants. The A/W 2011 season will mark the launch of a footwear collection for the brand. READ PRESS

Jennifer Schmidt was born and raised in Salinas, CA.  I attended CSU, Sacramento and majored in Apparel Marketing and Fashion Design.  While attending college, I designed for several local and school fashion shows.  Once I graduated CSU, Sacramento, I knew that I wanted to focus on fashion design, so I decided to go to grad school at the Academy of Art in San Francisco.  During the three years of attending the Academy of Art, I learned more than I ever could have imagined.  Since I have graduated the Academy of Art, I have been freelance designing and working on my own collection.  In March of this year, I made my debut at the ‘Gaultierize Yourself Fashion Show’ at the De Young Museum to celebrate the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit and looking forward to more opportunities.  “Live, Love, Create”.

Audrey Szeto is an artist and designer inspired by the intrinsically unique nature of each individual. She is always fueling her curiosity through the emotional and sensory responses of personal experiences as well as the recollection of memories. Whether through texture, weight or the feeling of constriction or exposure, each piece is about the process of transforming her ideas and sharing them with another. “The Safest Way to be” is a collection of garments inspired by methods of protection and self-preservation. Whether through suggestion of aggression or ritual practice, there is a connection between the physical and psychological that affords security and empowerment to the wearer. The emotional responses of the audience additionally become part of the story, as one cannot exist without the other.

He graduated in 2009 with a MFA in Knitwear and his men collection was shown at the New York Fashion week. Every piece in this unique series can be exhibited as sculpture or on the moving body. Amanda chooses this format to tell stories about personal and universal experiences. Each part of her collection is an observation of people and their different environments. Juxtaposing the body with unusual materials and proportions, ZuBauen pushes the limits of design and fashion in both style and substance. ZuBauen consists of clothing that is not governed by season or trend, but personal and global issues that affect us all.

PRÊT-À-PORTER SF 2011

[ Photos By: SHAUN TIANGSING ]

This year’s “PRÊT-À-PORTER SF” 2011, with mass market in mind, was an amalgamation of global fashion, technology and sophistication.   Designers hailed from Ireland, The Middle East, South Africa, Thailand, China, Russia and the United States, which was a genuine representation of today’s global fashion.  Sustainable fashion and technology were also an apparent theme, with Carol Wang’s presentation of bamboo fabrics, Sonas Denim’s literal take on recycling of denims and the stylish integration of advanced materials and design with personal media technology by Alphyn IndustriesAnya TatarenkoKajan Padraig  and LHC Couture with WorkPlayDate and Sasha Maksutenko jewelries, brought clean sophistication to the runway with beautifully fitted and elegant women’s ready to wear. Frankees Samad debuted her design with her personal modernizations of the Islamic dress.

SFFAMA’s founder, Owen Geronimo, feels that San Francisco is now ready for a worldwide audience. “PRÊT-À-PORTER SF” 2011 is one of the many successful fashion events along, with Project San FranciscoThe Beauty ExpoFashion FeudFashion Mash-Up Workshops and San Francisco Fashion Week ™,  that SFFAMA has brought to fruition, which are all labors of love with strong community support.  One of SFFAMA’s main goals is to establish San Francisco as a global fashion destination and as a catalyst of fashion and technology convergence.  SFFAMA strongly believes in social good “to utilize fashion-to apply-to make impact” in our ongoing philanthropic efforts and mentorship program with our ‘Fashion4Good’ project.

Ryzenberg On: Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2011

These gals sure have legs! I mean, Karlie, Anne V and Miranda (Lucky Orlando Bloom) Kerr were amongst many other uber babes who strutted their stuff at the Victoria’s Secret annual parade of all things leather, lace, naughty and nice (oh yeah, and let’s not forget those WINGS!)

This year was another production for the popular retailer, as the show featured six vignettes that consisted of “Ballet,” “Super Angels,” “Passion,” “Angels Aquatic,” “I Put a Spell on You” and “Club Pink.” They, along with the bevy of beauties, sure didn’t disappoint.

Kanye West, Jay-z, (with Beyonce cheering him on) Adam Levine and Nicki Minaj provided ‘some’ of the entertainment, but really the girls really was everything everyone was looking at. They stole the show and the looks were perfect and they were all smiling, which is so refreshing compared to the usual shows during Fashion Month.

What a fun night! Seriously, it’s not everyday you see gorgeous gal with flawless proportions sporting a $2.5M bra and nearly 20 wearing nothing but their skeevies! I enjoyed every second of it, and can’t wait to see what’s in the cards for next year.

Press Release DEFINE: BEAUTY Presented By Groundwork Opportunities

[San Francisco, CA, AUGUST 24TH, 2011] - Groundwork Opportunities invites you to Define: Beauty as we embrace fashion to show the intrinsic beauty found within all human beings. The first annual fashion show and fundraiser, Define: Beauty, will be held at the sleek and ultra modern Madrone Studios (1417 15th Street) on Thursday, September 29th, 2011, with a reception at 6:30pm and the show at 7:30pm.  Define: Beauty will feature 50 looks from eight designers to illustrate and challenge notions of beauty. One hundred percent of proceeds from Define: Beauty will fund a clean water well for 4,000 people in Moshi, Tanzania.

The Groundwork Opportunities team found inspiration for Define: Beauty while scouting sites for a clean water well with community members in Moshi, Tanzania.  The women of Moshi did not define beauty by the latest styles or labels.  Instead they defined individual beauty by one’s selflessness, inner strength and community.  Define: Beauty brings together designers who reflect the spectrum of beauty seen in Tanzania across collections that range from organic and ornate to fantastic and recycled.  The show will also feature a dynamic multimedia installation that demonstrates community through audience participation.

“By catalyzing a community of support around change, GO demonstrates the power of engaged people to do ANYTHING.  The future is not written … yet!"says Glynn Washington, host of NPR’s Snap Judgment.

Define: Beauty will showcase looks from Cari Borja, Ken Chen, Dallas Coulter, Sarah Liller, MENK, Kajan Padraig, Retrofit Republic and Daniel Sudar to an audience of 300.  Hair and makeup will be artfully executed by CODE salon.  Define: Beauty also offers an enhanced VIP package through Gilt City, and will have expertly crafted bites from Mission Cheese and Beast and the Hare.

“Given the many eco-friendly and socially responsible fashion shows, we wanted to focus on a specific cause to let guests directly see the community they are supporting and demonstrate how our support can impact their ideas, ” says Bartlomiej Jan Skorupa, executive director of Groundwork Opportunities.
