The 70's Show. 'Black History Month' Celebrated with lots of SOUL

(Photos By: Owen Geronimo)

70’s fashion and Black History Month was loudly celebrated in Oakland last weekend. Creative Director: MARIO BENTON

Black History Month is a remembrance of the events in the history of the African diaspora. Since 1976, it is celebrated annually in the United States of America and Canada in February and the United Kingdom in the month of October. In the U.S., Black History Month is also referred to as African-American History Month.

Black History Month actually started as Negro History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. The goal of Black History Week was to educate the American people about African-Americans’ cultural backgrounds and reputable achievements.

FEATURING COLLECTIONS BY:

San Francisco Designers and Partners: Laura Patnaude and John Robblee. Since John was young, he has had the ability to design clothes in his head. His fashion forward style and cute boyhood dimples caught Laura’s eye in the sixth grade which led to them becoming middle school sweethearts. Little did they know what lay ahead. Fifteen years later, they reconnected and have been inseparable ever since.

While discovering that each had a love for fashion, John still had not put his designs on paper. His frequent critique of shirts and lack of clothing options for an athletic physique led to Laura’s suggestion for John to finally sketch out what he would do differently. A few hours later, the ALLEY Collection was borne.

Combining John’s background as a Bay Area Firefighter with Laura’s upbringing around the family farm, a rough element of canvas and duck were transformed into stylish outerwear while soft twill was made into edgy fitted dress shirts. Alley Collection has filled a major gap by providing urban workwear tailored specifically for the athletic male. Each piece is designed and crafted in San Francisco, the city where the two reunited and now live with their Rottweiler dog, Alley.

For Creative Women…Just Add Your Personality. This slogan embodies every design that Varunee creates. Varunee, a Thai Language Instructor-come-fashion designer, is from Bangkok Thailand. Upon graduating from university with a degree in English and Linguistics, it seemed her life was set as a teacher, but her love for fashion design intervened and the inevitable prevailed.

Another graduation, this time from fashion design school, Brooks College in Long Beach California, meant Varunee was on her way. One of Varunee’s early accomplishments was to dress the beautiful and talented Tiffany Stoker, Miss California 1995, for The Miss America Pageant. Tiffany placed 3rd. runner-up. Varunee has progressed into a multi-talented personality with her RTW designs and her custom creations.

Today-Varunee is showing two sides of the designer: 1) Refined and Elegant designs under the VARUNEE label. 2) Funky/Elegant designs under the Sincerely, Varunee label.Once again, Varunee’s philosophy says it all: For Creative Women…Just Add Your Personality

  • LORIE DAWN

  •  Lori Dawn, founded in early summer 1985, reflects a girl outside of time, although, abiding by the same laws of physics that confine and define us all. She traverses eras, genres, and styles both whimsical and traditional.  The conglomeration of re-used materials assembled with aesthetics, reverie, and innovation define her designs. Not a label, a company, or a status, Lori Dawn designs for herself, her imagination, the audience with whom she shares her creations, and West Coast fashionistas.   Lori Dawn is a girl of many talents. She designs and creates one of a kind clothing, organizes and produces kick-ass photo shoots and runway shows, is a stylist and professional shopper, and works with up and coming models.
  • SALLY MARIE HAHN

  • Sally started experimenting with textiles as a young teen by trying to make the most out of one garment. Attempting to wear jackets as pants, suspenders, scarves, dresses etc., was just the start. “Not much has changed,” she willingly admits. Except now she’s formally educated in design and has developed industry experience. Although her aesthetic continues to evolve there is always a sense of wit to her boho-grunge looks. On her path of exploring new art forms, Sally recently started designing and handcrafting hats. This fun hobby has sprouted into a small business called “hats & tales” that you can find on etsy at www.etsy.com/sallymariehahn. Also, view her portfolio at www.sallymariehahn.com

Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave at the Legion of Honor

    Isabelle de Borchgrave

For more than fifteen years, the Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave has been producing a completely original body of work that is quite easy to explain but very difficult to categorize. Her central project has been to recreate exquisite, life-size historical costumes entirely from paper.  Taking inspiration from the rich depictions in early European paintings, iconic costumes in museum collections, photographs, sketches and even literary descriptions, de Borchgrave skillfully works paper to achieve the effect of textiles: crumpling, pleating, braiding, feathering and painting the surface.  The artist’s exhibition Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave is on view February 5 to June 5, 2011, at the Legion of Honor as part of the Collection Connections series.  Fine Arts Museums director John E. Buchanan, Jr., says of the exhibition, “I am proud to say that this exhibition, so appropriately presented in the galleries of our Legion of Honor museum, is the first to offer an overview of the artist’s most important bodies of work: from the white dresses and Papiers à la Mode to the Fortuny and Medici collections and her newest creations.”

Exhibition. The Legion’s presentation of over 60 trompe l’oeil masterpieces draws on several themes presenting quintessential examples in the history of costume—from Renaissance costumes of the Medici family and gowns worn by Elizabeth I and Marie-Antoinette to the designs of the grand couturiers Fredrick Worth, Paul Poiret, Christian Dior and Coco Chanel.  Special attention is given to the creations and studio of Mariano Fortuny, the eccentric early 20th-century artist, who is both a kindred spirit and a major source of inspiration to de Borchgrave.  Additionally, five creations inspired by four paintings in the Legion of Honor’s European collection will be presented for the very first time.

Ticket Information. Admission to Pulp Fashion is $15 adults, $12 seniors 65+, $11 youth 6–17 and college students with ID, and free for children under 6 and members. Purchase Advance Tickets »
