Define: Beauty will leverage fashion to show the intrinsic beauty found within all human beings who live together in harmony. In South Africa, a word to express this feeling of community is known as “Ubuntu”. Ubuntu conveys that no human can exist in isolation and GO believes that our ability to provide compassion and love in this world is what makes humans unique. We all have the inner strength to not only care for ourselves, but also to help others less fortunate than us. In the words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, “We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.”

About Groundwork Opportunities - San Francisco. Groundwork Opportunities (GO) (www.goworks.org) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to create a world beyond poverty by investing in groundbreaking ideas, empowering local leaders, and engaging communities. We operate off a simple maxim: The Power of Their Ideas and Our Support.  GO identifies and partners with developing world communities that envision and manage self sustaining programs aimed at addressing fundamental communal issues such as education, health care, and sustainable agriculture. In just three years, GO now impacts over 1,000 people/day in Africa, Asia, and Central America.

Sonas Denim @ Magic's Pool Tradeshow, Las Vegas

[ Designer: Gerry Kelly and models: Anna, Matisse and Lawrence ]

POOLTRADESHOW is the original independent tradeshow, established in 2001 for the boutique market and leading retailers world-wide. POOLTRADESHOW is hosted bi-annually every February and August in Las Vegas in conjunction with MAGIC Marketplace. POOLTRADESHOW carefully curates each show, balancing fresh talent with established brands. Each POOL brand is pre-screened to provide a well-rounded representation of items that will keep the boutique and lifestyle market at the pulse of emerging trends

[ Video By: REJECT SUPERSTAR ]

Sonas Denim was founded by Gerry Kelly an Irish born festival enthusiast living in San Francisco since 2000. Gerry was born in Dublin, Ireland. At the young age of 20, he got an itch for travelling after spending a few weeks on holiday in Greece.  The following Summer, he returned to Greece where he sold t-shirts and jewelry on the beach to other fun loving travelers.  When the holiday season came to an end in Greece, he moved on to Turkey, Israel, Sinai and Egypt where he continued to buy clothing and jewelry to sell to fellow travelers to fund his own travelling.  His tastes in fashion were a hit!

After a few years on the road, Gerry went back home to Dublin to visit his family and to rest for a few months before setting out upon the world again.  He had, as they say, “the travel bug.”  He decided to continue his ongoing search of fun music festivals and good times.  He especially loved to meet passionate party people. He traveled constantly to different festivals and raves around the world, living his dream of partying and meeting new friends.

CAMELIA SKIKOS. After completing a degree in Fashion Design at the University of Art in Romania, Camelia moved to London where she further defined more of her fashion studies while working as a Fashion Illustrator and Designer for various British brands.

In 2003 Camelia relocated to San Francisco where she accepted a position as a head designer at Levi Strauss. While working for Levi’s she was also designing for GAP and teaching Fashion Design at the Academy of Art University. Curently Camelia is working for her own label and continues teaching at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Camelia’s design philosophy stems from a continuing fascination with the human body form resulting in carefully orchestrated designs that fit to perfection. Her technique involves using geometric shapes and combining them with the human body. The result creates a multidimensional effect of innovation, dynamism and a sophisticated sense of femininity with an edge. All garments are made in California.

Press Release DEFINE: BEAUTY Presented By Groundwork Opportunities

[San Francisco, CA, AUGUST 24TH, 2011] - Groundwork Opportunities invites you to Define: Beauty as we embrace fashion to show the intrinsic beauty found within all human beings. The first annual fashion show and fundraiser, Define: Beauty, will be held at the sleek and ultra modern Madrone Studios (1417 15th Street) on Thursday, September 29th, 2011, with a reception at 6:30pm and the show at 7:30pm.  Define: Beauty will feature 50 looks from eight designers to illustrate and challenge notions of beauty. One hundred percent of proceeds from Define: Beauty will fund a clean water well for 4,000 people in Moshi, Tanzania.

The Groundwork Opportunities team found inspiration for Define: Beauty while scouting sites for a clean water well with community members in Moshi, Tanzania.  The women of Moshi did not define beauty by the latest styles or labels.  Instead they defined individual beauty by one’s selflessness, inner strength and community.  Define: Beauty brings together designers who reflect the spectrum of beauty seen in Tanzania across collections that range from organic and ornate to fantastic and recycled.  The show will also feature a dynamic multimedia installation that demonstrates community through audience participation.

“By catalyzing a community of support around change, GO demonstrates the power of engaged people to do ANYTHING.  The future is not written … yet!"says Glynn Washington, host of NPR’s Snap Judgment.

Define: Beauty will showcase looks from Cari Borja, Ken Chen, Dallas Coulter, Sarah Liller, MENK, Kajan Padraig, Retrofit Republic and Daniel Sudar to an audience of 300.  Hair and makeup will be artfully executed by CODE salon.  Define: Beauty also offers an enhanced VIP package through Gilt City, and will have expertly crafted bites from Mission Cheese and Beast and the Hare.

“Given the many eco-friendly and socially responsible fashion shows, we wanted to focus on a specific cause to let guests directly see the community they are supporting and demonstrate how our support can impact their ideas, ” says Bartlomiej Jan Skorupa, executive director of Groundwork Opportunities.

Tickets are available through Groundwork Opportunities at www.goworks.org/events until September 28th. Drinks and bites are included in admission.  General admission tickets are $45 for advance purchase or for $55 at the door.  VIP tickets are $75 for advance purchase or $90 at the door.
