Sonas Denim, a sexy, unique free-spirited brand from San Francisco

[ Photos By: SHAUN TIANGSING ]

Sonas Denim was founded by Gerry, an Irish born festival enthusiast living in San Francisco since 2000. Gerry was born in Dublin, Ireland.  After traveling to many different festivals and celebrations around the globe, he picked up the handy skill of fashioning his own handmade clothing for these festivities. The clothing ranged broadly, but his patched denim jeans became his signature piece and everybodys favorite!  He custom made over 20 different versions of the patched jeans for his friends before the demand was so large that he needed to take them to the streets. This was the beginning of his unique free-spirited denim company.

When Sonas becomes a success, it will have more of an impact on helping animals and will be a great example to other business to not waste and to be more socially responsible.  We want you to support our ideology on business.  Gerry has always viewed the jeans as a source of happiness: Sonas. Its good times. Liberation! Confidence and individuality. Community and celebration. Its the feeling of exuberance, like the ecstatic high of being with all your best friends at once. We at Sonas thought we would share some of this spirit that has kept us living. We want to be that example that just because you are a company, doesn’t mean you have to forget to give. Help us succeed, so that we can help others succeed too.

All money received is going strait to production.  We are paying the sewers, washers, cutters, the people who store our denim, the fit models, the pattern adjusters…and on and on.  The more money we receive, the more jeans that we can put into production and have in stores for people to learn about and be inspired by.  We wanted to be able to earn capital without handing over more ownership interest in our brand.  It’s important for us to stay to true to our values which is why we want to hold onto as much of the company as we can.

Ryzenberg On: Spotted — Céline Luggage Shopper Tote

Ryzenberg On: Spotted — Céline Luggage Shopper Tote

There is a new bag du jour in the fashionsphere. Céline’s Luggage Shopper Tote is amongst the most coveted items for celebs, models, editors and anyone with a keen sense of style.

So why is all of the sudden this Parisian house, famous for its polished looks, so sought-after? Well that’s simple, its creative director Phoebe Philo (formerly at Chloé) revived the brand and created an accessories line that usually steals the show during Paris Fashion Week. Another notable Celiné designer is Michael Kors, who in the late 1990s, was named the first womenswear and ready-to-wear designer and creative director. He developed several blockbuster collections and a critically acclaimed pret-a-porter line.

The brand has been around since 1945 and has kept its equestrian chic feel for decades. This is certainly a simple well-made bag that is versatile and timeless. It comes in several sizes and colors and will elevate a look to understated elegance.

When Céline debuted this purse in 2009, it was sold out for months and many were placed on wait lists worldwide. Now, although some colors are hard to find, you can find a piece of handbag heaven at SaksNeiman MarcusBarneys and other upscale stores.

But if you think it doesn’t come with a hefty price tag, THINK AGAIN. The line starts at about $1,000 and can go to as high as $3,500, so get ready to dish out the dough!

This is definitely some fabulous baggage you’ll want to carry.

    • Dierdre Wallace of deeFind @ http://www.deefind.net/ - Inspired by living in San Francisco, I wanted to design shoes that were quite unique, works of art and offered accessibility to women to really bare all in deeFind shoes. Conceptually futuristic architecture has always been appealing to me: dynamic angles, bold lines, audacious structural gestures — all frequently reflected in my design aesthetic. In keeping with the sensibilities of futurism exploring, the desired outcome was incorporate sustainable materials, while providing drop-dead sexy, eco-friendly products. Working hard to produce the most refined designs I am capable of, as I fanatically search for alternative materials and creative methods. Each handmade pair of deeFind shoes is constructed in humane working conditions with comparable wages.

Project Nunway III: A Fellini-esque Drag Fashion Extravaganza. Recap (Part 1) by Clinton Fein

    • Nunway creator, Sister Baba Ganesh describes Nunway 3 as “a Fellini-esque drag fashion extravaganza and holiday tea dance to celebrate the end of time as we know it. We make art couture from recycled and repurposed materials as our way of embracing sustainability and rejecting consumerism.“ A charity fashion show where Sisters are paired with designers to develop a look fashioned from recycled materials based on the theme 2012. Funds from this holiday fundraiser went to the Sisters’ general fund that supports their various fundraising and community awareness programs. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence® is a leading-edge Order of queer nuns. Since their first appearance in San Francisco on Easter Sunday, 1979, the Sisters have devoted themselves to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment. They believe all people have the right to express their unique joy and beauty and they use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.

    • Clinton Fein (born 1964) is a South African born artist, writer and activist, closely identified with his controversial web site, Annoy.com and his notable Supreme Court victory against Janet Reno, Attorney General of the United States, challenging the constitutionality of the Communications Decency Act in 1997, where Fein’s right to disseminate his art (such as the uenequivocally indecent and annoying Torture exhibition) was upheld in a landmark victory for the First Amendment. As an artist, Fein is represented by Toomey Tourell Gallery in San Francisco and Axis Gallery in New York, and his shows have been dogged by controversy. In 2001, Fein was scheduled to open a solo exhibition in San Francisco in October. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Artforum Magazine pulled an advertisment for Fein’s show from their October issue. In 2004, printing company Zazzle found themselves embroiled in an ugly censorship dispute after they deliberately destroyed two of Fein’s images.

Peter Loc Tan Nguyen, by Lexie Tiongson

by Lexie Tiongson,  Originally Published in SOMA Magazine

Representing androgyny, Peter Loc Tan Nguyen’s collection defines the portrayal of masculinity and femininity brought into several pieces. Effortless, sophisticated, and understated are just a few words to describe the collection. As a recent graduate from Academy of Art University with a degree in both Fashion Design and Knitwear, Nguyen combines the two styles together to make a seemingly contemporary collection. To add a unique touch to his garments, Nguyen mounted knitwear pieces onto organza to make a more structural and sculptural feel. His purpose was to bring a new perspective to knitwear. Most of the textiles he used were made with an industrial machine to make a fine knit so that the knitwear aspect is disguised.

Some of his most memorable pieces include fine lines and structural cuts that convey the combination of masculinity and femininity he wishes is perceived from his inspiration of menswear. With a women’s ready-to-wear collection, Nguyen admits that he purposely used the construction of menswear and applied it in his designs.

“I wanted to explore what was inside of a menswear garment and translate it into a womenswear garment to play with masculinity but with feminine curves and fabrication,” Nguyen explains. With this aspect, his pieces definitely portray a balance of the two opposite characterizations. Nguyen believes that making his collection not so outrageous and expected distinguishes the feel and understanding of his fashion designs.
“I wanted to make a classic garment, but a piece that is simple and just illustrates what clothes are,” Nguyen articulates. In this mindset, his designs truly epitomize androgyny, making it something worthwhile, timeless and classic.

Nguyen is currently studying in Paris at Studio Berçot through Academy of Art University’s Sister City Scholarship Exchange. In 2010, he was the first place Council of Fashion Designers of America’s (CFDA) $10,000 Scholarship recipient. The money was used to fund his senior collection at Academy of Art University, which was shown at his graduate fashion show this past May. His collection was also just recently showcased at Vancouver Fashion Week as a part of a sponsorship through Vancouver Fashion Week’s producer Jamal Abdourahman.Hoping to stay in Europe for a few more years, Nguyen wants to see all parts of fashion, art and design, and eventually come back to San Francisco to establish his label. “As a designer, my goal is to express my perspective on fashion and design,” Nguyen concludes.

Ryzenberg On: Mr. Kors Goes to Wall Street

Ryzenberg On: Mr. Kors Goes to Wall Street New York’s Stock Exchange just got a little glitzier. Legendary American brand Michael Kors occupied the NYSE trading floor Thursday morning and made a strong ca-ching sound — of $20 a share. The company’s initial public offering raised $944 million in Hong Kong on Wednesday, valuing the company at $3.8B, according to the Financial Times. In fact, the opening surpassed analysts expectations and even closed the day at $24.20, which values the company at $4.62B. Kors (NYSE: KORS.N) had the biggest opening public offering in the history of US fashion; it even beat Ralph Lauren’s astounding initial IPO of $882M in 1997. The newlywed, Project Runway judge and designer is selling 5.6 million shares and will pocket a mere $116M. Now that’s some serious shekels! So here is the deal. This is absolutely a sign that the economy is slowly rebounding. Traders and analysts see the brand’s potential and the strong company as a reliable and  good buy. This shows how despite the current crisis, luxury brands, although not fully unaffected, are seeing signs of improvement. This year alone, Prada filed for an IPO in Hong Kong for $2.1B back in March and Salvatore Ferragamo also entered the trading circuit.  Currently, there are 169 Michael Kors retail stores in the US and 34 in Europe and Asia. They all showcase apparel, jewelry, accessories, footwear and watches. The company hopes to double its stores worldwide.  Now I guess 2011 is the year of Michael Kors! Mazal Tov and looking forward to celebrating and documenting more milestones. This leaves me wondering, who will be the next to jump on the bull? DVF perhaps. [  Photos By: Irina Bourova ]

Jackson Square’s La Boutique SF opened its doors for a fun-filled holiday party, and Jen Darling’s bags were the main focus.

The night featured lots of vino, snacks and the company of wonderful bloggers such as Erin from Apartment 34, Melissa from Savvy in San Francisco, Punam from Nothing Broken, Kim from J’adore Couture and Amber from Amber’s Notebook

Fun times had by all, and it was great catching up with these wonderful gals, meeting new friends and finally checking out La Boutique. The brainchild of Carole Harari hosts an array of exquisite clothes, accessories and artwork in a Parisian, yet rustic environment.

The two-story boutique and gallery features some of the most innovative European designers such as Firma from Germany, French brand Swildens and Collection 66 from Switzerland. If your style is more uptown meets Rue St. Honore, Cacharel, Zadig and Voltaire and Athe Vanessa Bruno will do the trick.
