Shaun Tiangsing is a very disciplined up-and-coming photographer that works with SFFAMA at many events like San Francisco Fashion Week. He was nominated for Best Photographer at San Francisco Fashion Awards 2011. His work has been published in SF Chronicles’s Style section. A self-proclaimed introvert with a bad memory, Shaun uses photography as a tool to document or remember things. His poignant relationship with the camera makes him an outstanding photographer with the appreciation of the craft as an art form.

Ryzenberg On: Versace for H&M Already Causing Chaos

Ryzenberg On: Versace for H&M Already Causing Chaos It’s about 6 p.m. on Friday and people in San Francisco are already lined up and ready to brave the rain (AGAIN) for the much-anticipated Versace for H&M collection. The same goes for Toronto, New York and most likely any other city that’s carrying the coveted bright ensembles. However, the collection already debuted overseas and it caused quite a ruccus. Fights broke in China, the website crashed in Europe and even leader of the pack Donatella made a cameo appearance at the Regent Square store in London.  It was so crazy, items sold out in 30 minutes in Shanghai and Dubai. Wow, I never thought one needed a war reporting background to snag one of these sought-after items — until I decided to experience it all for the Love of Lanvin! After braving the cold and the rain last year for more than 10 hours, I can offer a few words of advice to those seeking to own designer capsule collections for a fraction of the price. Be Patient: It’s going to be a long night. Expect lots of drunks to walk by, homeless people and even some wondering what’s going on. Oh yeah, please be aware that some might even ask if you are waiting to go get a new iPhone or for tickets for the latest Twilight movie. Once you are given a bracelet (if you are amongst the first 280 people in line) you are free to roam the streets until your group is ready to go. Bring lots of layers: It will get freezing (no matter where you are) so bring lots of coats, scarves and warm sweaters. Since H&M employees are connoseurs of this shenanigan, at around 6 a.m. they will come out with coffee and cookies (and even free shwag) Go to the bathroom early: See if there is a hotel nearby or somewhere that you can go and freshen up. After 1 a.m. restaurants begin to close and it’s going to be impossible to find a loo. If you can hold it in, some delis and coffee shops start opening at 5 a.m. Entertainment is a must: Charge your computer, iPhone, Droid, BlackBerry, bring an iPad. You must have some sort of entertainment. Magazines, Sudoku — anything. Food — another necessity: Have snacks especially if you can’t sleep at like 4 a.m. I remember at the H&M I was at in San Francisco, the Starbucks across the street opened at 5 a.m. and I ran to grab some tea.     Ryzenberg On: Joseph Altuzarra visits SF’s Neiman Marcus

    I was so lucky to attend a Joseph Altuzarra trunk show and personal appearance last week at Neiman Marcus. I do have to say that at first I was a little bit intimidated, but Altuzarra is the sweetest, nicest and approachable designer out there. Oh yeah, did I mention that I want everything from his S/S 2012 collection? Well if you want to gift me something really special, there is your cue.

    But here is the deal on how it all went down — I got to Neimans super early and started walking around aimlessly (although I was secretly looking for the Stella McCartney Falabella bag) until I asked three sales gals if the Altuzarra event was taking place. One of them kindly took me to the Rotunda, where they were having a VIP brunch and Q&A, and clearly I was not invited to.

    So be it! I enjoyed the Q&A and got to find out some of the most interesting and candid facts about Altuzarra. It was delightful and when the event ended, I went downstairs and chatted with some fellow bloggers from Refinery 29 and Amber Lane, mastermind behind Amber’s Notebook. Of course, after much anticipation, waiting and brunch crashing, I finally had a chance to talk and take a picture with the superstar designer himself!

    Not a bad day for a gal who started blogging regularly only a few months ago. 

    There is something so desirable about ALTUZARRA. His clothes are not only tailored to perfection, but they also contrast utility, masculinity and feminity with amazing knits and to die-for draping. To me, this is a great contrast that works for the most ladylike socialite to even an edgier downtown gal.

    Did I mention the quality of the knits. When trying one of their chunky knits from the Fall 2011 collection, it was like satin and completely light. (A girl can only dream) & of course he used one of my personal prints — argyle! By the time I saw those sweaters, it was heaven indeed.

    His S/S 2012 collection was one of the most talked-about during New York Fashion Week. His eclectic combination of leather, outerwear, bold prints and active wear made a very cohesive thoughtful collection. I was really impressed with his attention to detail in each piece.

    No wonder he just received the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund! This sartorial visionary is certainly going places and can’t wait to see what’s in stock for the future, which hopefully includes owning one of his coveted garments.

      Ryzenberg On: Alber Elbaz — designer & Author

      So I know the fashion world is raving over last week’s Versace for H&M party in New York and the Victoria’s Secret Show. But, I’d like to mention something even more amazing that’s about to shake up everyone’s satin heels and ballet flats — Alber Elbaz is writing a book about what’s it like to make a collection for Lanvin.

      This is indeed music to my ears. Can the timing of the announcement be more perfect? It was exactly one year ago that we (and I guess I’d say myself) were anxiously waiting for his collection to arrive at H&M and everyone was gushing about it.

      The 700-page masterpiece will include anecdotes, photos and it’s set to be released in 2012.

      This will certainly make my Amazon.com wish list & “hint, hint” if you want to shower me with love and gifts!

        THREAD Show Announces Holiday Independent Designer Shopping Tour

        THREAD Show lands in San Diego, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco this Holiday Season 

        FALL/WINTER 2011 –THREAD Show, the multi-city shopping event promoting emerging designers and artists, is traveling to San Diego, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco to showcase the top trends for the holidays. Just in time for gift-giving season, THREAD will showcase 100 of the top independent designers in each market to ensure attendees find unique and creative gifts. The holiday shopping tour will feature festive interactive spaces such as a DIY Gift Wrapping Lounge and a themed photo booth. For eight years, THREAD Show has encouraged cities across the country to shop local by presenting a curated showcase of the most skilled and creative designers in each market. In addition to shopping prices lower than retail from the top independent designers, attendees will enjoy live music, a pop-up local art gallery, Style Lounge, Nail Bar, fashion art installation, THREAD Well Lounge and giveaways all day.  

        This year, THREAD Show is also announcing a new Premium Ticket, available to the first 300 at the door. Serial shoppers will be granted entry one hour prior to general admission. The shopper who prefers wide open isles and plenty of room to browse will be able to enjoy first access to the holiday collections. This limited availability ticket also comes with a gift bag packed with THREAD Show swag and a complimentary cocktail.  

        Skip the third-party retailer this season and head to THREAD for a unique holiday shopping experience. The preview hour for each show will be from 11 a.m. to noon. Premium Tickets will be available for $25. Doors open to general admission from noon to 5 p.m. General admission tickets will be available for $5 if attendees pre-register up to 24 hours prior to the show at www.threadshow.com. $10 tickets will be available at the door.  

        THREAD Show’s holiday shopping event in San Francisco is going to be on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Metreon Shopping Center. 

        “This holiday shopping event allows trend-setters to shop more cost effectively while purchasing unique gifts inspired with creativity for people they care about,” explains THREAD Show spokesperson, Danielle Gano. “THREAD Show also gives locals an opportunity to meet the designers face-to-face, feed the local economy, be kind to the environment and ensure the gifts they give are locally-made and ethically produced.” 

        Each show is held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the 11 a.m. to noon hour reserved for Premium Ticket holders.           Shaun Tiangsing: Un-retouched Proof by Brad Carrick

          Having worked with Shaun on several fashion events, I had a sense of what to expect in our recent shoot for SOLZ.  Whether at San Francisco Fashion Week 2011, The 2011 SF Fashion Awards or the countless SFFAMA panels and events we have done, the experience is somewhat the same.  Shaun shows up with equipment.  He does not rely on available light, choosing to help create the perfect environment.  Yet once the shot begins, he basically moves into the background, allowing the emotion to unfold naturally.  Maybe it’s his experience working with runway models where direction is not possible, or maybe he just trusts himself to catch real moments.   

          Only once in a while will Shaun poke his head out from behind the camera to make a suggestion.  Perhaps just “how about an epic shot facing the sun?”, “how about a happy one?”, or more often than not  … “I think we’re all good for this.”  The most consistent thing about working with Shaun, however, is the result.  He works fast, and you can expect to receive a folder of selected photos, enough to give you a fair amount choice but still be manageable. Don’t expect the choice to be easy though, because they are probably all fantastic.  After our shoot, we had a chance to sit down so that I could get a better idea of what makes Shaun Tiangsing … click.

          • SOLZ: Nature vs Nurture.  How much of photography is talent and how much is learned?  For the “learned” part did you study photography in school?  
          Shaun:  Wow. Starting off with the touqh questions first I see. Talent is more important by far. Anybody can learn all the technical stuff but you can’t be taught your vision and ideas. I hate to say this because I meet so many photographers going to school for photography - but you do not need to.  I do understand, though, that everybody is different and some people really need a school environment to learn and benefit. I learned the technical stuff through books and online videos.  I often browse through magazines for the ads as well, but I’ve learned the most just by shooting.  Shoot, go home and look at the pics, analyze what I like and don’t like, go out and shoot again.   
          • SOLZ: Did you always know you wanted to do fashion photography?
          Shaun::  No. Oddly enough, it just kind of found me.  Before this I was taking pictures of my dog.
          • SOLZ:  How does your background contribute to your concept of fashion?
          Shaun:  I have no background in fashion. I often wonder to myself what am I doing here but somehow I fit in.  My wish for designers is to always try to take it to the next level.  Be a leader and innovate!

          • Portfolio/Pitch Night is a platform created for creative professionals.
