Fashion & Green Series: 7 Questions With Jules Lauren Vasic of The Green Stylist

SFFAMA: Tell us about yourself and what you do.

JLV: I am an eco-fashion designer, a writer, a sustainability and business consultant, a stylist, an artist and a social entrepreneur. What I do: Founder, Editor-in-Chief of The Green Stylist (www.thegreenstylist.com), a website that empowers consumers to vote with their dollars to push sustainable fashion and beauty mainstream. We write about the very best sustainable fashion and beauty products in the market and offer deals through our website and Facebook page.

SFFAMA: Why is eco-fashion important?

JLV: This is SUCH an important question - thanks for asking! The fashion and textile industry operates in a global economy and touches the far corners of our planet. It is a giant manufacturing industry that does not support local trade, social and environmental justice, not because it doesn’t want to, but because there is little transparency and accountability along the supply chain from cotton crop to our cotton t-shirts. Governments offer little help to regulate the system because it is just so complicated to understand and track.

The shoes you are wearing right now, for example, could have been made from cotton grown in India - with the use of pesticides and herbicides that pollute water streams and drinking water - the cotton could be transported to a Chinese factory to be dyed and made into cloth, the rubber soles could be from another continent entirely, and everything could be put together in China in a factory where workers are not paid a livable wage. Then, the shoes are packaged with non-recycled cardboard boxes and plastic film for protection and shipped to Western Countries for consumption. At the end of the whole process, the shoes are discarded when we’ve grown tired of them in a few years, seasons and sometimes in a few short months.

8 Questions. Fashion & Tech Series with Fashion Blogger Christina Topacio of Profresh Style

SFFAMA: Tell us about yourself and what you do.

CT: I am a 23 year old, California-raised, full-time blogger for my blog, Profresh Style. I’m a “multi-hat” wearer: an editor, photographer, web designer, graphic designer, marketer, stylist, and so much more. I use my blog to promote my style and my interests and allow people to get inside my world through my blog.

SFFAMA: Where do you see fashion and technology heading?

CT: Fashion and technology have coincided for quite some time. Back in 2006, Alexander McQueen used technology to create a hologram of Kate Moss during his Fall show and it’s widely expanding. Now that bloggers have made their marks, iPads at the runways are becoming more common, smart phones are being utilized for more than just phone calls. We’re transferring docs to our phone, posting to our blogs, forecasting trends with the click of a photo and mass-emailed to everyone. The longevity of it all will be determined by what the technologists come up with. The new forms of technology that make information mass-producing faster, will be the determining factor on the future of fashion and tech.

8 Questions: FASHION & TECH SERIES with Joanna Riley-Weidenmiller of 360 Fashion

SFFAMA: Tell us about yourself and what you do.?

JRW: I am CMO and partner of 360fashion Network (www.360fashion.net), 360Fashion is a network of high-level fashion professionals using the latest web 2.0 and mobile technology to market their brands. 360Fashion members use live blogs, mobile magazines, Facebook streaming and Facebook/Web/Mobile ecommerce stores to expand their brand reach. I work closely with fashion professionals to generate revenues through the technologies developed by the 360fashion team. My focus and mission is to increase exposure, revenues and monetization for the leading brands as they go global. 360Fashion is the first business network focused on using technology to innovate and push forward the fashion industry. The digital platforms support and bring the brand message and product to where the customers are online. 360Fashion was the first company to bring blogging and social media to the fashion industry and pioneered mobile reporting with Nokia Corporation.

SFFAMA: Where do you see fashion and technology heading?

JRW: I see fashion using mobile catalogs, live TV/Steaming, Facebook/SNS shopping, ecommerce video/commercials engaging the online buyer, fashion games, geo-locating of merchandise, sema codes (bar codes that launch mobile application showcasing the brands products), twitter engagement (D&G). * It is extremely important to understand the power of the blogger or user generated content, with over half the web content being user generated (discussing brands, making videos about brands, “liking’ and ‘friending’ brands, it is important brands have a voice, but also listen and engage the audience, making them want to ‘share’ their information. *Facebook, blogs, Twitter and customer reviews are considered the most effective tactics for getting consumers to talk up products online. (Etailing survey of 117 companies, September 2009)

Fashion & Green Series: 7 Questions With Kara Ashe of GoVee

SFFAMA: Tell us about yourself and what you do.

Kara Ashe:
I am the San Francisco Green Fashion Examiner for Examiner.com, I publish a veg blog called GoVeeBlog.com, and I have begun independent public relations consulting for the Bay Area green fashion and beauty industries. Before moving to the Bay Area, I did nonprofit sales and business development on the east coast.

SFFAMA:
Why is eco - fashion important?

Kara Ashe:
Fashion, as an entity, has penetrated every facet of our society. It’s important for something so powerful, so pervasive, and therefore so potentially damaging, to have an eco-friendly offset. People need to know they have a choice and ability to express their style, and to enjoy the luxuries of fashion, while making less of a negative impact on an increasingly fragile environment.

SFFAMA:
Explain to us how you apply eco products or sustainability to your design (or your product/services)?

Kara Ashe:
Everything I’m involved in is eco-centric. GoVeeBlog.com shares vegan and vegetarian recipes, and offers news and tips promoting a stylish and cruelty free lifestyle. On Examiner.com, I share the region’s green fashion resources— events, designers and businesses— with readers looking to “green” their style. I am passionate about using my pr and communication skills to build exposure for local fashion and beauty companies, their green products, and their events. Beyond that, most of what I do is web based—how much greener could you get?
