Onassis Proves We Can Live in San Francisco and Still Dress with American Inspiration, European Style and Japanese Aesthetics All at the Same Time

San Francisco’s menswear retail market just got a little more interesting with the new arrival of Onassis at 845 Market Street in the Westfield Centre.  If you missed the write up in WWD, Onassis has been eyeing the West Coast and San Francisco, replete and overflowing with creative professionals and lots of discerning guys in Silicon Valley who can wear Japanese selvage jeans and a chesterfield coat to work every day, since they launched the lifestyle brand in 2010. The first location outside of New York, San Francisco is also the next step in a global expansion strategy which will see store openings in sophisticated and creative capitals across the US, Europe and Asia such as Boston, London and Berlin.

My own background is steeped in classic Americana, Japan and Europe, and the Onassis brand concept and product were love at first sight. With Global, Classic and Confident as a tag line, Onassis has small development teams working across several continents to create American-inspired designs with European styling and Japanese aesthetics and fabrics priced very nicely at the lower end of contemporary. The San Francisco location is currently stocked with smart, stylish wardrobe essentials, but will have the added benefit of exclusively tailored items and collections once Onassis familiarizes itself with the local San Francisco ethos and customer base. Asked about the possibility of locally manufactured products, Onassis store manager Mitch Silverstein promised to keep an eye open for new developments and craftwork in the San Francisco apparel and accessories industry.

I should also note that Onassis is ready and willing to take chances with experimental designs in their SoHo location and higher priced premium and “emotional” pieces at Rockefeller Center. So if you’re in the market for a discerning wardrobe upgrade, a perfect wool houndstooth 3 button blazer with working button holes or a perfect quilted leather vest or a perfect shrunken vest in Japanese fabrics and a perfect espresso in a cozy club-like lounge area, these precious things can all be yours at the new Onassis store in San Francisco.

Scene at the EFFEN® Vodka Art of Design™ Event at Terra SF

Arriving at tonight’s EFFEN® Vodka Art of Design™ event at Terra SF, I checked my mobile phone to see who had checked in on Foursquare. Only “Danny Bloomfield” and 3 others had already checked in so, before anything else, I decided to try to be Foursquare number five for the evening.

At the welcome table, I couldn’t help but notice one of the lists on the attendant’s clipboard was labeled “Influencers.”  I thought to myself - who are these people and who are they actually influencing?? – so, I was very surprised when I gave my name and the attendant stood up and ushered us into the busy main room to meet the event PR team.

Last Friday, I got an email from Janice Yu of Limegreen PR to invite friends to the event and she wanted to meet us. We chatted about Chicago, where she is based, and the upcoming San Francisco Fashion Week. After a few photo ops with our great SFFAMA photographer Armand Smith, I got a text from new face and model Allan Dixon and I see him walking towards us. He was excited about his first advertising modeling gig with the Lytro product team whom he met at one of the Apple Store workshops I curated during AIGA SF Design Week. Allan will soon be coming to your neighborhood Target and Best Buy all over North America as the star of the looped video promo for the cool new Lytro cameras.

After I chatted with Damien Miller, decked out with his camera gear, about his new project and his photo studio, I caught up with SFFAMA’s business developer and Solz founder Brad Carrick holding court in the corner. We are excited about Brad’s new venture, establishing California’s Leading Fashion Law Firm, as a New Equity Partner with the Lord Bertram Law Firm. I met Lord Bertram previously during our Pitch Night and Google+ Workshop and I reassured Brad he was going in the right direction as he was frequently asked by startups about his legal services and fashion startup expertise. Of course, Brad also went to Harvard Law.

I took a breather, headed outside, and finally remembered I had been holding the same EFFEN vodka movie star cocktail called “Picture Perfect” all night, but had failed to even taste it. We were supposed to be circulating the entire venue drinking different EFFEN cocktails while viewing the curated local art exhibit and then go through some stylized voting ritual for the best EFFEN drink creation, but everyone seemed to have “EFFEN” forgotten all of that and were either loading up endlessly on all the cocktails or talking endlessly like me. I decided to make sure I finished my Foursquare checkin.

Heading back inside, I ran into gorgeous model Farnaz Dadashi and her dapper economist sidekick Ignacius Garcia. We chatted about San Francisco Fashion Week and non-profits. Soon, I was directed by Robert Nixon, our CFO, to the other side of the room to say hi to Terra SF owner David Boyle. We were supposed to be venue scouting, not just talking and drinking, and had just met David last week by accident.  We were given very nice business packs and handy swag bags from the Terra SF team.

The flickering of lights signaled the end of the evening as people started their final exits. That’s when I ran into always stylish blogger Adele McElveen of Fashionista Lab. We chatted about blogging and about her Modcloth cover article. As the security guards guided us to the door we merged again with Farnaz, Ignacius, Robert Nixon and one of our favorite fashion designers Scott Ian McFarland. Also in attendance at the EFFEN® Vodka Art of Design™ event were the evening’s host, fashion blogger Lindsey Louise of Complacency Kills, super mom and lifestyle blogger Melissa Sanchez of Savvy in San Francisco, makeup artist Erin Dudley, models Jenn Lazorack and Ben Kline, and Jennifer Choi of Goorin Bros.

Makeshift Society’s Salon: The Art of Fancy {Recap}

Good parties make me happy. That’s for sure! And Makeshift Society’s Salon: The Art of Fancy was a nice treat to my Wednesday evening. Lots of entertainment and lots of socializing.

The last time I was at The Bold Italic was when I was interning for Bri & Angela at blogshop back in April. Had a great time being there again! It’s really a great space and I love how it can accommodate a social party, workshop, etc. 

Since The Art of Fancy was a social hour for many San Franciscans to learn how to put fancy tricks up their sleeve, Skill Exchange partnered with MSS for this event. From learning how to tie a bow tie to crafting elegant floral arrangements, party-goers definitely ended the night with lots of things to add to their “skills” list.

Speaking of skills, check out this amazing idea! Photojojo made an awesome Makeshift Skills Board for guests to to share their talents! I definitely want to learn how to garden… hah!

I mentioned last week that I’m now interning for Makeshift, so during the party I worked the membership table where I got to pass out these cute little buttons and postcards. Don’t you just love the little picture riddles? BE AMAZING!

It was a great evening of fun, laughter and enjoyment! And look at how much the Makeshift Skills Board got filled! Lots of talent in San Francisco, it’s too amazing and too inspiring.

Ellen von Unwerth Exhibit & #LexusAttracts San Francisco

Throngs of San Francisco’s night denizens, hipsters and glitterati descended on the Metreon’s City View, overlooking Yerba Buena Gardens and SFMOMA, for the Lexus Attracts event. I’m excited to see the Ellen von Unwerth photo exhibit because I’ve loved Devon Aoki since her modeling days. Most would recognize her from her films, but I’m also a fan of her super DJ brother Steve Aoki.

I asked the usher at the elevator about celeb sightings and she said “yes, one.” Walking into the venue, the bar line in the main room was endless, so I opted for the strawberry ice cream stand. In the corner, enjoying the night, we spotted Joel Goodrich of TRI/Coldwell Banker, Lili Balfour of Atelier Advisors and Michelle Hinderleider of Bloomingdale’s.

Next, we headed to the tent outside City View. One reason we attended this event was to see if we could say hello to Jonathan Adler. Robert Nixon, CFO of SFFAMA/Fashion+TechSF, attended Brown University with Adler. Months before, we had discussed inviting Jonathan Adler Inc. to participate in AIGA SF Design Week. Entering the interior of the bright tent, with another awesome Lexus motor car in the middle, we ran right into Jonathan Adler and his partner Simon Doonan. I gestured Robert to say “hi” and we had a brief conversation about next year’s SF Design Week (and strawberry ice cream) with Adler, Doonan and their perky, statuesque publicist Lisa. So, we’ll see. After a few quick snapshots, in parting, we got some reasonable assurance that Jonathan Adler or his store would love to participate in SF Design Week next year. By that time, Anna Pintz of Mode Walk walked up and we dove into a brief conversation about her new fashion project.

The sushi and oyster bars were plentiful, and the drink bars were overcrowded, but parched, I braved the bar at the edge of the terrace and chatted with photographer Jessica Chavez until I got my Benitos cocktail, a very yummy alcohol concoction.

I was excited to return to the main room to see the photo exhibit, Ellen von Unwerth’s body of work specially photographed for this event. The black and white photographs were blown up and superimposed, covering the walls and converging the experience of the new Lexus line with the playfulness of the famous couple models, in this case, Devon Aoki & James Bailey, Jamie King & Kyle Newman, Jason Schwartzman & Brady Cunningham, Simon Doonan & Jonathan Adler. Also enjoying the exhibit was Mai Le, of Fashioni.st, who told us about her upcoming photo exhibit.

The best part of the evening, for me personally, was the Style Spy exhibit featuring street style photographers from around the world. The exhibition showcased street style fashion in its glory, reminiscent of and/or inspired by the likes of Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist, Street Pepper and Yvan Rodic of Facehunter.

The big reveal of the evening was the Lexus LF-LC concept car. It is a hybrid 2+2 sport coupe with the signature Lexus spindle grille. It will go into production in three years. It is awesome. Long on style and design, the Lexus LF-LC absolutely bridges the gap between the Japanese auto industry and their sexier, more expensive luxury sportscar competitors in Europe.

Though it was a last minute decision to attend this big society event, it was well worth it and fun. I realized that I am a closeted extrovert with some occasionally strong reservations about the social scene. I did miss Jamie King, but she was somewhere in the house that night.
