Sonas Denim, a sexy, unique free-spirited brand from San Francisco

[ Photos By: SHAUN TIANGSING ]

Sonas Denim was founded by Gerry, an Irish born festival enthusiast living in San Francisco since 2000. Gerry was born in Dublin, Ireland.  After traveling to many different festivals and celebrations around the globe, he picked up the handy skill of fashioning his own handmade clothing for these festivities. The clothing ranged broadly, but his patched denim jeans became his signature piece and everybodys favorite!  He custom made over 20 different versions of the patched jeans for his friends before the demand was so large that he needed to take them to the streets. This was the beginning of his unique free-spirited denim company.

When Sonas becomes a success, it will have more of an impact on helping animals and will be a great example to other business to not waste and to be more socially responsible.  We want you to support our ideology on business.  Gerry has always viewed the jeans as a source of happiness: Sonas. Its good times. Liberation! Confidence and individuality. Community and celebration. Its the feeling of exuberance, like the ecstatic high of being with all your best friends at once. We at Sonas thought we would share some of this spirit that has kept us living. We want to be that example that just because you are a company, doesn’t mean you have to forget to give. Help us succeed, so that we can help others succeed too.

All money received is going strait to production.  We are paying the sewers, washers, cutters, the people who store our denim, the fit models, the pattern adjusters…and on and on.  The more money we receive, the more jeans that we can put into production and have in stores for people to learn about and be inspired by.  We wanted to be able to earn capital without handing over more ownership interest in our brand.  It’s important for us to stay to true to our values which is why we want to hold onto as much of the company as we can.

Define: Beauty will leverage fashion to show the intrinsic beauty found within all human beings who live together in harmony. In South Africa, a word to express this feeling of community is known as “Ubuntu”. Ubuntu conveys that no human can exist in isolation and GO believes that our ability to provide compassion and love in this world is what makes humans unique. We all have the inner strength to not only care for ourselves, but also to help others less fortunate than us. In the words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, “We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.”

Press Release DEFINE: BEAUTY Presented By Groundwork Opportunities

[San Francisco, CA, AUGUST 24TH, 2011] - Groundwork Opportunities invites you to Define: Beauty as we embrace fashion to show the intrinsic beauty found within all human beings. The first annual fashion show and fundraiser, Define: Beauty, will be held at the sleek and ultra modern Madrone Studios (1417 15th Street) on Thursday, September 29th, 2011, with a reception at 6:30pm and the show at 7:30pm.  Define: Beauty will feature 50 looks from eight designers to illustrate and challenge notions of beauty. One hundred percent of proceeds from Define: Beauty will fund a clean water well for 4,000 people in Moshi, Tanzania.

The Groundwork Opportunities team found inspiration for Define: Beauty while scouting sites for a clean water well with community members in Moshi, Tanzania.  The women of Moshi did not define beauty by the latest styles or labels.  Instead they defined individual beauty by one’s selflessness, inner strength and community.  Define: Beauty brings together designers who reflect the spectrum of beauty seen in Tanzania across collections that range from organic and ornate to fantastic and recycled.  The show will also feature a dynamic multimedia installation that demonstrates community through audience participation.

“By catalyzing a community of support around change, GO demonstrates the power of engaged people to do ANYTHING.  The future is not written … yet!"says Glynn Washington, host of NPR’s Snap Judgment.

Define: Beauty will showcase looks from Cari Borja, Ken Chen, Dallas Coulter, Sarah Liller, MENK, Kajan Padraig, Retrofit Republic and Daniel Sudar to an audience of 300.  Hair and makeup will be artfully executed by CODE salon.  Define: Beauty also offers an enhanced VIP package through Gilt City, and will have expertly crafted bites from Mission Cheese and Beast and the Hare.

“Given the many eco-friendly and socially responsible fashion shows, we wanted to focus on a specific cause to let guests directly see the community they are supporting and demonstrate how our support can impact their ideas, ” says Bartlomiej Jan Skorupa, executive director of Groundwork Opportunities.

Tickets are available through Groundwork Opportunities at www.goworks.org/events until September 28th. Drinks and bites are included in admission.  General admission tickets are $45 for advance purchase or for $55 at the door.  VIP tickets are $75 for advance purchase or $90 at the door.

ABOUT KAJAN PADRAIG

Kajan Padraig started on December 4, 2009 by Kanjana (Cake) Carlos and Patrick Steber, who have built the company from the ground up. Our first collection was made up of knit T’s, dresses, and tunic style tops. Which became a highly successful collection, because of the quality of fabric, the cut of the designs and Kajan Padraig’s unique design elements.

We are both highly educated and trained in the design and construction of couture, made-to-measure clothing. This experience is what sets us apart from other designers. We see the subtle differences from woman to woman and know how to make beautiful clothing to make all women feel beautiful. The caliber of design has not gone unnoticed, and after just 6 months, Kajan Padraig was commissioned to design and fabricate two gowns for the San Francisco Opera Gala in September of 2010.
