  • Dierdre Wallace of deeFind @ http://www.deefind.net/ - Inspired by living in San Francisco, I wanted to design shoes that were quite unique, works of art and offered accessibility to women to really bare all in deeFind shoes. Conceptually futuristic architecture has always been appealing to me: dynamic angles, bold lines, audacious structural gestures — all frequently reflected in my design aesthetic. In keeping with the sensibilities of futurism exploring, the desired outcome was incorporate sustainable materials, while providing drop-dead sexy, eco-friendly products. Working hard to produce the most refined designs I am capable of, as I fanatically search for alternative materials and creative methods. Each handmade pair of deeFind shoes is constructed in humane working conditions with comparable wages.

AOF Symposium 2011 @ SFAI

AOF Symposium 2011 @ SFAI | Oct 29-30 | 10AM-10PM | Exhibitions | Lectures | Fashion.edu-Series | Tandem-Series | CineToile-Series | Fashion Competition & Awards Ceremony.
With the participation of Mr. Steven Kolb - CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America

The Arts of Fashion Foundation will celebrate its 10th anniversary of supporting emerging designers with the Annual Arts of Fashion Symposium and Premier International Fashion Design Student Competition held from October 29 through October 30, 2011 from 10AM-10PM at the San Francisco Art Institute (800 Chestnut Street).

The combined event will feature fashion exhibitions from the 2011 Paris summer Masterclass, educational conferences, and a unique runway installation that will showcase the work of 66 students who have been selected as part of The Premier International Design Student Competition for this year’s theme, TENSION.

During the runway installation of the International Design Student Competition, there will be a space dedicated to the creation of a live visual extension of students’ designs through different artistic mediums, like photography and video. The visual works produced from these photographers and videographers will come together at the culmination of the Arts of Fashion Symposium Awards Ceremony on Sunday afternoon awarding students who display tremendous potential as emerging designers.

Guest designers, industry professionals, fellow students, friends, family and the public will also have the chance to see the selected initial sketches from these students, along with their final garments. This new format will give more visibility to the work of the students and their portfolios creating a full fashion experience for visitors.

For attendees, it will be an additional opportunity to network with industry professionals coming for the conferences. This year, The Foundation is fortunate enough to be hosting Mr. Steven Kolb, the CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, who will participate in the Symposium and in a lecture during the Symposium’s Tandem-Series.

All exhibitions and lectures (Fashion.edu, CineToile-Series, and Tandem-Series) are free and open to the general public. However, lecture seating is very limited, so the Foundation highly recommends that those who plan to attend reserve seats in advance for $20. The Awards Ceremony, Awards Cocktail Reception and Farewell Party require a ticket for admittance.

Tickets and schedule for the event are available by visiting the Arts of Fashion.

Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave at the Legion of Honor

For more than fifteen years, the Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave has been producing a completely original body of work that is quite easy to explain but very difficult to categorize. Her central project has been to recreate exquisite, life-size historical costumes entirely from paper.  Taking inspiration from the rich depictions in early European paintings, iconic costumes in museum collections, photographs, sketches and even literary descriptions, de Borchgrave skillfully works paper to achieve the effect of textiles: crumpling, pleating, braiding, feathering and painting the surface.  The artist’s exhibition Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave is on view February 5 to June 5, 2011, at the Legion of Honor as part of the Collection Connections series.  Fine Arts Museums director John E. Buchanan, Jr., says of the exhibition, “I am proud to say that this exhibition, so appropriately presented in the galleries of our Legion of Honor museum, is the first to offer an overview of the artist’s most important bodies of work: from the white dresses and Papiers à la Mode to the Fortuny and Medici collections and her newest creations.”

Exhibition. The Legion’s presentation of over 60 trompe l’oeil masterpieces draws on several themes presenting quintessential examples in the history of costume—from Renaissance costumes of the Medici family and gowns worn by Elizabeth I and Marie-Antoinette to the designs of the grand couturiers Fredrick Worth, Paul Poiret, Christian Dior and Coco Chanel.  Special attention is given to the creations and studio of Mariano Fortuny, the eccentric early 20th-century artist, who is both a kindred spirit and a major source of inspiration to de Borchgrave.  Additionally, five creations inspired by four paintings in the Legion of Honor’s European collection will be presented for the very first time.

Ticket Information. Admission to Pulp Fashion is $15 adults, $12 seniors 65+, $11 youth 6–17 and college students with ID, and free for children under 6 and members. Purchase Advance Tickets »
